The Toyota Corolla is a C-class car that has been traveling around the world for over 50 years. There is not a single corner on the globe where a sedan, wagon or hatchback called Corolla would not be known. The reason for this popularity was the titanic reliability of all components and assemblies and a pleasant appearance. And the fuel consumption per 100 km of the Toyota Corolla is so low that it will help save the family budget.

The appearance of the first instance occurred back in 1966. Toyota was able to design a car that was low on fuel, could travel long distances, looked decent, was reliable, and cost a small amount of money.

In 1974, the Corolla model entered the Guinness Book of Records as the most popular and bought car in the world. By 2013, more than 40,000,000 copies were sold out of all 12 at that timegenerations.

In the second half of 1991, the seventh generation of the popular car rolled off the assembly line. It was available in European countries, the United States of America and Japan. "Corolla" in this body received an award from ADAC as the most reliable car. The main production was in Japan, and a new plant was opened in Turkey.

Toyota offered petrol and diesel units:

• Petrol 1, 3, 1, 6 and 1.8-liter engines.
• Diesel 2.0 liter unit.

The car was supplied with different types of transmissions: 5-speed manual or automatic with 3, 4 gears, depending on the configuration. The main one was front-wheel drive, but there were also all-wheel drive versions on sale.

Toyota Corolla 1, 6 did not go beyond 7-8 liters on the highway in terms of fuel consumption, which is considered an excellent indicator even today.

The new generation of 1995 brought changes only in the exterior and interior. From a technical point of view, almost nothing has changed. Suspension and transmission settings remain the same. The only major innovation was the rejection of carburetor injection, now a modern injector was installed in all versions for Russia and the USA.

European left-hand drive versions differed greatly from the Japanese versions in round headlights, taillights, bumpers and interior fittings. If the "Japanese" wasdifficult to find without full power accessories, the "Europeans", on the contrary, were equipped with mechanical windows and manual adjustment of rear-view mirrors.

Thanks to the new injection, it was possible to reduce fuel consumption in Toyota Corolla 1, 6 (mechanical and automatic). Now the engine needed no more than 11-12 liters when driving in city traffic.

Another modification appeared in 2001 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The appearance has been completely redesigned, now every element has a European touch.

The following body types were available to choose from: sedan, hatchback and station wagon. Also on sale was a station wagon version with all-wheel drive and increased ground clearance - Verso. Chassis settings have changed. Significantly increased comfort by increasing the free play of shock absorbers. The front axle runs on a classic MacPherson strut layout, while the rear axle runs on a beam.

The range of engines has also been updated. The Japanese introduced a new development of active valve timing (VVT-i), thanks to which fuel consumption per 100 km in the Toyota Corolla decreased to 6-7 liters on the highway. A total of several engines were offered:

• 1, 4-, 1.6- and 1.8-liter engines with a maximum power of 97, 110 and 125 horsepower respectively.
• 1, 4-, 2.0- and 2.2-liter diesel units with 90, 116 and 177 horsepower.

"Toyota Corolla Fielder", fuel consumption: AI-95 with automatic gearbox - up to 11 liters in the combined cycle, AI-95 withmechanical transmission - up to 9.8 liters in mixed mode. For a station wagon, this is an excellent performance, which was achieved thanks to the new VVT-i system.

Versions of these cars are still successfully sold on the secondary market and are in demand among car owners due to their good exterior, high-quality interior, strong suspension and hardy engine. There are options with a mileage of 300,000 kilometers, which are in good condition and do not require repair of power units and assemblies.

E-140 body model

The next generation was the Corolla in the body under the marking E-140, which appeared in 2006. This car is not much different from the previous generation in technical terms. The main changes affected the design of body parts and interior.

Suspension, brake system and steering settings remained at the same level. For 2006, they were quite enough. The range of engines for cars that were officially supplied to Russia consisted of 1.3- and 1.6-liter gasoline units. The 1.3-liter engine produced 101 horsepower, while the 1.6-liter produced 124. The timing was still controlled by the VVT-i system.

The fuel consumption of the 2008 Toyota Corolla varied between 10-12 liters in mixed mode and depended on driving style.

A little later, Toyota decided to introduce a robotic gearbox into a popular car, which significantly affected the economy. However, dubious reliability and jerks when shifting gears forced potential buyers to refuse to purchase such equipment. After 2 years, the Japanese removed the Corolla variation with a robot.

New Toyota Corolla

In 2013, Japanese engineers introduced the new Corolla. It turned out to be a completely redesigned car, built on a new platform using engines with unprecedented efficiency and response.

In a Toyota Corolla, fuel consumption per 100 km has dropped to 10 liters in mixed mode. This economy was facilitated by lightweight materials for body parts, a new transmission.

Exterior

The front is very reminiscent of the Rav-4 that set the tone for the entire Toyota lineup. A long and sloping hood without pronounced stiffeners smoothly flows into the headlights. Now lenses and LEDs are used for lighting, and automatic running lights are also built into the interior. The grille is chrome plated and continues the linelanterns, ideally adjacent to the border of the hood. The space-shaped bumper is made up of many sharp corners and stiffeners.

The side of the sedan looks great and looks a bit like German cars. Doors and wings are devoid of sharp transitions and design frills. The wheel arches gently surround the complexly designed aluminum rims. The roofline flows smoothly and unobtrusively from the trunk to the hood. The door handles are painted in body color, the side mirrors are equipped with an automatic folding option and a wide system of adjustments from the passenger compartment.

The back is no different from the original design solutions. The stern looks modern, but modest. Massive lights are illuminated by LEDs, reflectors and parking sensors are built into the bumper.

Fuel consumption per 100 km on the Toyota Corolla does not exceed 10 liters in mixed mode, thanks to the new dynamic parameters of the body and with the help of reduced weight.

Interior

The interior of the new Corolla does not surprise with newfangled design solutions. However, all parts are made of high quality plastic and fit perfectly.

The steering wheel is trimmed with leather and made in the classic version of the three beams. Multimedia control keys are built into the horizontal beams, and the vertical one is decorated with a decorative aluminum insert.

The classic dashboard boasts a large trip computer display and LED backlighting. The center console looks good only in a rich configuration. Shifted to the sidethe driver's air ducts and the faded climate control system are saved only by the large display of the multimedia system with the built-in navigation system. The polished plastic around the screen quickly gets dirty and covered with a web of scratches.

The chairs are comfortable, there are enough adjustment modes. Rear seat passengers have plenty of legroom, but tall people sometimes touch the ceiling with their heads.

The car is equipped with all modern systems: airbags, brake force redistribution system, parking sensors, a powerful music station, full power accessories, heated seats.

Power Plants

Three types of engines are available for Russian customers:

1. 1, 3-liter unit with 99 horsepower.
2. 1, 6-liter, capable of delivering 122 horsepower.
3. 1, 8-liter with 140 horsepower.

All types of installations run on gasoline with an octane rating of at least 95 and are equipped with Dual VVT-i automatic valve timing. The transmission depends on the configuration, you can choose a classic mechanics or a modern CVT.

Fuel consumption in different modes

Toyota Corolla's fuel consumption rate is highly dependent on operating conditions and does not go beyond 11 liters even in city mode.

An engine with a volume of 1.3 liters will require 7.2 liters of fuel in city mode and no more than 6 in mixed mode. On the highway, this motor is the most economical, for every100 km run will need no more than 4.7 liters.

Fuel consumption ("Toyota Corolla" 1, 6 automatic) will not exceed 9 liters in the city, 5.4 liters on the highway. In mixed mode, the car will travel 100 kilometers in just 6.6 liters. In terms of the number of sales, the 1.6-liter unit wins, it easily copes with all tasks and does not force the driver to visit gas stations often.

Toyota engineers always produce high-quality and reliable cars, so there are simply no complaints about the failure of the power unit or suspension parts.

Motorists note in any conditions a confident start of the engine on the Toyota Corolla automatic. Fuel consumption has always exceeded the declared figures from the manufacturer, there is no such problem with the CVT.

The only drawback users believe is the lack of electric seat adjustment even in the highest trim levels and a narrow rear sofa, which is designed for two passengers. In other matters, the car does not cause any complaints and is able to please the owner every day.
