Checkpoint "Lada Grants": characteristics, features and device

Many motorists have heard that the new Lada-Granty checkpoint has a cable drive, and someone is talking about multi-cone synchronizers. And some even claim that they “shoved” an old Renault box into the car, which they presented to AvtoVAZ engineers to be torn to pieces. Our article contains enough information to understand the features of the new manual, automatic and robotic transmission.

Description of the "mechanics" in the "Lada-Grant"

This type of checkpoint, which is mounted on Granta, has its own history. At its core, this is the same 5-speed gearbox as in the VAZ-2108, but it has undergone major modernization more than once. From the beginning of the production of Lada Grants, the car was equipped with a model 2180 gearbox. Such a gearbox has a shift rod with a gear selector. The same transmission was mounted on the first generation Lada-Kalina car.

An improved model of the Lada-Granty checkpoint (2181) has been produced since 2012 and in a new transmission:

  1. Two cables replaced the shift shaft.
  2. The speed selector is located on top of the body, not in the oil as it used to be.
  3. There is a multi-cone synchronizer for first and second gears, which is a big advantage.
  4. The clutch housing was also modified, so now experts recommend pouring only 2.2 liters of oil into the box itself at the Lada Grants checkpoint, and not 3.3 liters, as before.

Frequent "diseases" of the gearbox

Many motorists note that the modified transmission has become much better, but still some typical shortcomings are inherent in this device:

  • A specific crunch is heard when shifting the second gear (this problem existed even on the VAZ-2108-09).
  • Shifts are not distinct, even if there is a cable drive of the Lada-Grants checkpoint.
  • When driving in the second and third speeds, the driver may hear a hum.
  • When accelerating the "Lada-Grants" most often there is vibration, trembling, bounce of the gearshift lever in third gear.
Automatic transmission
Automatic transmission

Automatic

Automatic transmission on the car in question began to be mounted for the first time since July 2012. The Lada-Granty gearbox (classic model JF414E) with a torque converter is mounted mainly on Nissan, Mitsubishi and Suzuki cars. Many motorists should remember that such a transmission option on the LadaGrant is paired only with the engine 21126.

Automatic transmission is characterized by high strength and reliability. With proper operation and careful attitude, timely maintenance and selection of high-quality parts, an automatic transmission can “run” up to 180-200 thousand km.

The manufacturer recommends using certain brands of oils for the Lada-Grants cable gearbox, which are suitable for certain climatic conditions of the region where a particular car is operated. Changing the oil in an automatic transmission is different than for a manual transmission, and the lubricant is completely different. These tips are not axiomatic in terms of selecting the appropriate oil.

Automatic transmission problems

The “automatic” device does not cause great difficulties in the process of driving. If the transmission does not need to be repaired, then the main problems in the device appear due to the fault of the driver:

  • with frequent slipping, friction clutches quickly burn out;
  • gaskets and oil seals leak after overheating;
  • when hitting all sorts of obstacles, the automatic transmission casing can break through, and then repair is definitely required.

Motorists have more complaints about the performance of the "automatic" - high fuel consumption, slow acceleration of the car, twitches are felt during gear changes when driving fast.

Robotic gearbox

The device has replaced the 4-speed gearbox. On the car robot boxStarted installing in the spring of 2015. The main mechanical part of the new robotic gearbox 2182 was the mechanism of the box 2180. In cars with a robotic gearbox, an electromechanical drive (mechatronics) of the German company ZF is installed instead of the standard pedal and clutch block for the “mechanics”.

The robotic box must be combined with the VAZ-21127 engine with a capacity of 106 liters. s., one of the most powerful engines that are mounted on the Lada Grant. The robot box can function properly not only in automatic, but also in manual mode. This box has five gears. A car with AMT 2182 is considered more economical than with an "automatic". Manual transmission significantly improves dynamics and reduces fuel consumption.

Characteristic problems of the robot box

This type of gearbox is based on the 2180 transmission, so when the car is in operation, a strong hum is not heard, like the 2181 manual transmission. However, when driving in first and second gears, slight howling may be felt, although after running in a new car, the noise disappears over time.

The Lada-Granty transmission may behave abnormally - when driving in first gear and roughly pressing the accelerator pedal, the second speed switches through once. In this case, a "slip" occurs.

The main drawback of the robotic gearbox is jerks and jerks when switching gears during fast movement. With a quiet ride, this unpleasant phenomenon does not occur. In such a situation, the driver can use the manual mode, andthen the robot box practically turns into a "mechanic".

Interesting facts

The following interesting information was found out about the Lada-Granty checkpoint:

  1. Gearboxes from Lada-Grants will not be mounted on Priora, as the engineers considered that it would not be profitable to remake almost the entire design of power units.
  2. The price of the car "Lada-Grant" and "Kalina-2" increased by 5-7 thousand rubles when equipped with new gearboxes.
  3. According to the reviews of motorists, the first cable gearbox options were not entirely successful and had quite a few drawbacks: vibration appeared after 70-80 thousand mileage, howling boxes, increased wear of parts and more. Based on this, the manufacturer made amendments to the device and improved the characteristics. However, many motorists have a negative impression of the cable-operated gearbox.
  4. The AvtoVAZ plant today continues to work on improving the gearbox, which will become the second generation of cable-type gearboxes. Engineers plan to mount it for the second generation of Lada-Grants.

Further development of the Lada-Grants manual transmission

The developers of the AvtoVAZ company are going to further improve the design of the Lada-Granty checkpoint, since this mechanism has a great potential. The use of hydraulic drives, multi-cone synchronizers in third gear and other innovations are all in the plans for the future.

How to choose the rightgearbox?

Literally all checkpoint options on the Lada Grant have their pros and cons. If we do not take into account the low noise of the mechanical part of the domestic-made transmission, then it can be noted that the "robot" and "mechanics" are faithful and durable, without characteristic "diseases". For those who like a leisurely ride and comfortable driving, an “automatic” is suitable. However, there is only one negative - high fuel consumption.

The mechanical version of the gearbox “howls” a little, but noise vibrations do not particularly affect its resource. Under normal use, the device can cover about 180-200 thousand km. In a robotic gearbox, an electrical failure is sometimes observed. The driver will, of course, need to get used to driving a car with a robot box. What transmission to buy a car with and what kind of oil to fill in at the Lada-Grants checkpoint is a personal matter for everyone. In this situation, much depends on the wishes of the driver himself.

Gearbox selection
Gearbox selection

It can be concluded that the cable-operated Lada-Granty checkpoint has become more maneuverable than its younger brother with rough rods. The improvement of the nodes has significantly improved the performance of the car, reduced vibrations and improved the quality of gear shifting. However, many motorists still express dissatisfaction with the high wear and frequent breakdowns of the gearbox, although the manufacturer promises to replace the Lada Grants gearbox, which will increase its wear resistance.
