Dump trucks have always been, are and will be relevant in the cargo transportation market. These machines are designed to deliver various bulk cargo, mainly over short distances. Usually carriers buy cheap copies. These include the "Chinese". But they wear out very quickly. As operating experience has shown, Russian KamAZ trucks are more enduring in our conditions. And they cost about the same. Well, let's look at one of these representatives. KamAZ-6520 is in our review today.
Description
So what is this truck? KamAZ-6520 is a dump truck that has been produced at the Kama Automobile Plant since 2007. This model is still being produced, but in a slightly different form (more on that later).
Model 6520 was intended for the transportation of construction and industrial goods of large mass. These dump trucks are activelyused in quarries, when digging pits and on construction sites. The machine is capable of transporting materials such as gravel, sand, soil and so on. Also, this car was used by public utilities for garbage collection.
Design
This truck has a unified cab, which was installed on almost all modifications of KamAZ trucks (including 5460). The car has a massive bumper with rectangular optics and two powerful towing eyes. On the radiator grill there is a proud inscription "KAMAZ". Above the windshield is a sun visor and several parking lights.
Restyling
In 2012, the design of the truck cab was changed at the Kama Automobile Plant. What does the new KamAZ-6520 look like? The reader can see a photo of the updated version in our article.
The cab received a different, more "kind" shape. The shape of the bumper and grille has changed. But in the profile changes are minimal. Only reflective tape and additional mirrors appeared (this is a big plus in terms of safety). The number of wipers on the windshield has also changed - now there are three of them.
Cab Flaws
What do the reviews say about the KAMAZ cab? The metal on the truck is rather weak, as noted by the owners. And if the restyled models have just acquired new chips, then the old copies have already begun to rust in full. Corrosion has been the weak point of all KAMAZ cabs since the 90s. Particularly vulnerable places near the arches and the bottom of the grille. Also on new models, optics suffer. The headlights of cars are plastic, and over time they begin to become cloudy. Factory foglights are very bad at lighting. Their owners usually change them for new, more powerful ones.
KAMAZ-6520: dimensions, clearance
Depending on the modification, the total length of the dump truck is 7.71 or 7.8 meters. Height - 3.01 meters. The width of the KamAZ-6520 dump truck, excluding mirrors, is 2.5 meters. Ground clearance - 20 centimeters. However, all important nodes are located quite high, which allows the dump truck to move on roads without asph alt pavement without problems.
Capacity
The car is equipped with a metal body with a volume of 12 m33 with a hydraulic lifting drive. On board this machine is able to take up to 14.4 tons of bulk cargo. In this case, the angle of elevation of the body is about 50 degrees. This truck also has a tow hitch. KAMAZ-6520 is capable of towing trailers with a gross weight of up to 20 tons.
Cab
Getting into the car is carried out by means of handrails and steps. Inside, the cabin has a simple and sometimes ascetic appearance. The steering wheel is thin and two-spoke, as on the first KamAZ trucks of the 70s. The front panel also has not changed much since those times. There are still pointers here, as well as a row of indicator lamps at the top. There is a small glove compartment in the center of the panel.
The manufacturer claims that the KamAZ-6520 has a superior cabin. But drivers say otherwise. In terms of comfort, this truck is practically no different from the old KamAZ-5320. Here are the same flatseats with a minimum of adjustments and a noisy cab with constant vibrations.
The picture has changed for the better after installing a new sample. So, the amount of plastic in the cabin has increased. The panel itself has become slightly convex, and part of the console is turned towards the driver.
The steering wheel has become four-spoke and more compact. The instrument panel is now hidden behind a single plastic window. The shape of the seats has changed (the driver's even on air suspension), but still their design is much inferior to foreign cars. The gas pedal is no longer floor mounted. Above the window there is a plastic shelf with three compartments. However, there is still no air conditioning, power windows and other "benefits of civilization" in KamAZ. Drivers also install tape recorders on their own.
In general, the cabin on KamAZ has improved slightly. But the old problems have not gone away. Inside is still noisy and there are a lot of extraneous vibrations.
Specifications
KamAZ-6520, like other dump trucks of this brand, is equipped with an eight-cylinder V-engine of the 740.60 series. However, if on other models it was atmospheric, then in this case there is a turbine. Thanks to supercharging, the power and torque of the engine have increased significantly. As a result, the KamAZ-6520 engine develops a power of 360 horsepower with a cylinder displacement of 11.76 liters. Torque reaches 1570 Nm at 1900 rpm. The power plant features direct fuel injection and meets Euro-3 environmental standards.
In 2008 inA new power unit has been added to the lineup. They became the American Cummins ISLe engine, manufactured in China under license. This power unit has a capacity of 342 horsepower. This is a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine.
With the release of the new cab, this unit replaced another, more powerful one. They became the Cummins ISLe 400. This is also an in-line "six" with a working volume of 8.9 liters. Engine power - 400 horsepower, torque - 2100 Nm. The motor complies with Euro-4 standards.
Gearbox
As a gearbox on all engines, a mechanical 16-speed transmission with a divider, dry single-plate diaphragm clutch and mechanical control is used. This is a German ZF 16S151. What do the reviews say about her? The box is quite reliable and can withstand heavy loads. And since KamAZ-6520 is a dump truck, these characteristics are especially important.
However, as the reviews say, even the German box is not perfect. For some, the springs fly off the disc, because of which the car starts to twitch. The synchronizer of the fifth and sixth gears also wears out.
Depending on the engine
What is the fuel consumption of KAMAZ-6520? This parameter depends on the type of engine. So, with a domestic engine, a truck consumes about 32-35 liters per hundred mileage. With Chinese engines, which are smaller and more efficient, the car consumes 26 to 30 liters.
But this figure can vary significantly, as conditionsoperation are different. For example, in the north, the same truck can consume up to 50 liters, since most of it is spent on warming up (and the road itself is by no means fast). Note that KamAZ-6520 is able to overcome 14-degree climbs when fully loaded and accelerate to a speed of 90 kilometers per hour.
Problems
Are there any pitfalls in the new KAMAZ engines? Reviews say that the car may have problems with the fuel system. The times when KamAZ digested any oil slurry are long gone. The current diesel engines are very picky about fuel quality (especially if it is a Common Rail system).
The pump suffers first. The fact is that diesel fuel acts as a lubricant for injectors and injection pumps. Due to poor-quality lubrication, wear of rubbing parts greatly increases. Also, the owners are not advised to neglect the maintenance regulations. The fuel filter on KAMAZ engines is changed every ten thousand kilometers.
There are also malfunctions in the turbine. This usually happens due to the use of bad fuel. Since the turbine operates on the energy of the exhaust gases, the soot that comes out of the cylinders forms a thick coating on the impeller. After a certain time, the compressor can simply catch the wedge and fail. Also, to extend the life of the turbine, you need to change the oil on time. It doesn't have to be expensive synthetics. You can also pour "mineral water", but do everything according to the regulations. By the way, along with the oil, the filter also changes. It's not worth saving. Cheap filters fall apart and particles canget into the lubrication system, which is not very good. Naturally, there can no longer be talk of any filtering properties.
Chassis and brakes
This dump truck is built on a classic frame platform with a 6 x 4 wheel arrangement. The front of the truck has a dependent suspension with leaf springs and a pivot beam. Behind are bridges with balancers. Brakes are full drum, pneumatic drive.
After 2012, the car received a frame with reinforced spars. But the design of the brake system and the suspension itself remained the same. This scheme has not changed practically since the times of the USSR. The suspension is very simple and reliable. As experience shows, it is able to withstand overloads.
The suspension itself is quite stiff. On bumps, the driver constantly jumps, even when the car is loaded.
Driving problems
The steering is a gear-reducer. All KamAZ trucks come with a hydraulic booster. As noted by the reviews, the control of the dump truck is poor. On the road, you constantly have to taxi. The steering wheel play is simply colossal. This is a disease of both old and new trucks.
Cost
If we talk about ten-year versions with an old cab, they can be purchased for an average of 1 million 700 thousand rubles. But new copies will cost at least 3.5 million rubles. This price includes:
- 400hp diesel engine;
- interaxal and interwheel differential lock;
- power steering;
- two 190Ah batteries;
- 350 liter fuel tank;
- fog lights and sun visor.
For a fee, you can retrofit a dump truck with an autonomous interior heater.
Conclusion
So, we found out what characteristics and features KamAZ-6520 has. As you can see, the cost of a domestic dump truck is much lower than foreign cars such as "Man", "Mercedes" and "Volvo". They cost fabulous money and pay off for a very long time. The main competitor of this dump truck is the Chinese Hovo. Its cost is about the same (both for new copies and for used ones). However, as practice shows, Khovo has a smaller resource of units than the Russian KamAZ. According to the technical characteristics, they are almost identical. But many are afraid to take the "Chinese". Few people know how to repair these cars, and finding spare parts for the Hovo sometimes becomes an impossible task. Therefore, many prefer KamAZ-6520.
