The steering shaft crosspiece is one of the main components of the driveshaft of each car. This mechanism performs the function of transmitting torque from the box to the drive axle (usually rear) at a constantly changing angle during rotation. Today we will look at how the steering shaft cross is arranged, what it is made of and how it works.
Material
Directly the body of the mechanism is made of high-strength alloy steel. In the production of a mechanism called a steering shaft cross, a long heat treatment step takes place, as a result of which a high surface hardness of the studs is ensured. Bearing steel is used as the material for the outer races. It is also used for the production of clip needles, which are also part of the cross.
Device, purpose, principle of operation
The steering shaft cross itself (including Toyota Prado) is a kind ofcruciform hinge, ensuring the alignment of all elements that rotate during the transmission of torque. The cardan shaft joint has two forks, which are connected by a cross. The ends of these devices are connected to four spikes, and the forks themselves are attached to the "cardan" pipe. Thus, the steering shaft cross (including VAZ-2113) is driven by needle bearings put on 4 spikes (ends) of the entire mechanism.
It is also worth noting that each of the two forks has special holes. They are equipped with needle bearings. Reliability of fixation and protection against displacement of these devices is provided by a retaining ring. Its thickness depends on the permissible axial clearance. By the way, some motorists change regular retaining rings to small devices in order to reduce backlash and vibrations.
The purpose of the cross is to provide a movable connection that can change its angle when the road is rough, thanks to which the driveshaft provides torque transmission to the drive axles. It should be noted that the steering shaft crosspiece can also dampen the resulting shocks and vibrations during the vehicle's collision with a bump. Thus, this small detail prolongs the life of the entire shaft, taking all the stress and shock at the junction.
Dimension
Not all cars are equipped with the same size crosspiece. Each model is equipped with its own device, so when buying, you should not focus on choosing a device fordifferent car model. Here, for example, GAZelle and Volga, despite the fact that they have a common engine and even the device as a whole, are equipped with crosses of completely different sizes.
Lifetime
The steering shaft cross has a very simple design, due to which it withstands shocks so steadfastly and can be as durable as possible. On average, this device fails at the 500,000th run, so it is considered one of the strongest and most durable parts in the entire car structure. The only thing the mechanism needs is periodic lubrication. If you regularly monitor the condition of the cross, it will last even longer than the above period.
