The hub is a part that is a bearing assembly that connects the wheels to the suspension. Sometimes the concept of "hub" means the whole complex of parts, and sometimes - only one of its parts (bearing assembly). In today's article, we will tell you in detail about how this mechanism works and what function it performs.

Wheel hubs are used to install the disc with the help of special bearings on the axis of rotation (trunnion). The design of this mechanism assumes the presence of flanges. The latter attach the disc itself or the wheel rim to which the drum is attached (on modern cars - the brake disc).
Wheel hub function
This mechanism provides free rotation of the entire wheel around its axis. This rotation occurs due to bearings. To date, wheel hubs are equipped with roller or double-row ball bearings.
In most modern devices, the entire body performs the function of the last partsdevices. Because of this, the wheel hubs cannot be repaired. When they fail, the mechanism is completely replaced.
Where are they posted?
Each car has at least 4 hubs, which can be placed on the front and rear axles, right and left half shafts. Each wheel has its own mechanism that ensures the free rotation of the tire.
Bearing device
As noted above, these parts can be of roller or ball type. Regardless of it, these bearings can perceive radial and axial loads that are transmitted from the wheel to the hub. However, they have their differences. For example, roller mechanisms, unlike ball ones, have a large bearing capacity. Therefore, they provide a linear area of contact with the raceways of the bearing rings. Ball devices form a point contact zone.
The rear wheel hub, equipped with roller bearings, has a small axial clearance. Its values during the operation of the car may increase. This happens due to the gradual wear of parts. Therefore, in order for the gap not to exceed the permissible values, such a hub has a special adjusting device.
Cars are most often equipped with ball angular contact devices. Such bearings in the mechanism are filled with lubricant, which is present in the system all the time of operation. Since the lubrication is long-lasting here, the front wheel hub does not require periodic maintenance, respectively, adjustments too. By the way, now many manufacturers equip hubs with special sensors (such as ABS and others), so even the cheapest part today costs about 2.5 thousand rubles.
And finally, we note several manufacturers that supply high-quality parts to the Russian market. These are products of NSK, NTN, KOYO and SNR. Hubs from these manufacturers are distinguished by their high reliability and low cost.

What is the difference between front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive: the difference, advantages and disadvantages of each
Among car owners, even today, disputes about what is better and how front-wheel drive differs from rear-wheel drive do not subside. Each gives his own arguments, but does not recognize the evidence of other motorists. And in fact, it is not easy to determine the best type of drive among the two options available
How is the transfer box arranged?
The transfer case (or razdatka) is an integral part of every four-wheel drive vehicle. Its function is to distribute torque (hereinafter KM) along the axes of the car, as well as to increase it when driving off-road or on bad roads
How are the rear shocks arranged?
One of the main functions of a modern shock absorber is to provide comfort to the driver and passengers. This element also serves to reduce the load on the body when hitting pits and all kinds of speed bumps, because the impact is first transmitted to the wheels, and then to the body. In order to somehow reduce this load, the front and rear shock absorbers soften this force by compressing several centimeters in length
Adjusting wheel alignment. How to adjust wheel alignment yourself. Wheel alignment stand
Today, any service station offers wheel alignment adjustment. However, car owners can carry out this procedure on their own. So they will learn to better understand and feel their car. Auto mechanics unanimously argue that it is extremely difficult to set up a wheel alignment on your own. Actually it's not like that
How are power steering systems arranged?
Power steering is a device that serves to reduce the gear ratio of the steering mechanism. They facilitate the work of the driver's hands when parking and turning. Thanks to the hydraulic booster, the steering wheel of the car becomes so light that you can turn it with just one finger. And today we will devote a separate article to this mechanism in order to find out its structure and principle of operation
