For the domestic motorcycle culture, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of Java: the youth of every 2nd biker is connected in one way or another with this brand. There is a feeling that these machines have long disappeared, but in fact you can even buy a “banana” completely new. In this article we will consider the motorcycle "Java-640".
By the time it was born (1984), the "three hundred and fifty" with an index of 638 was the most coveted foreign car in the USSR. For those times, a powerful two-cylinder "two-stroke", excellent Czechoslovak quality, semi-automatic clutch, which has become a mechanical analogue of today's quickshifters, and a biting price tag - a dream!
"Java", the full name of which was designated 350 typ 638.5.00, differed from its predecessor by 12-volt electrical equipment and a new engine. In various markets, the motorcycle was sold with an oil tank and a separate lubrication system, but in the USSR there were no oils for two-stroke engines, therefore, the device was delivered to our market without a pump for it.
In 1987, a new car 638.0.00 arrived in stores, which featured a newplumage, tank and a modified slope of the shock absorbers, after which, without changing the index, the design of the arrows located in the tidy was also refreshed, the slope of the mufflers increased, the shock absorbers lost their cups, metal nameplates were replaced with stickers, while part of the motorcycles began to put a rodless Chezet fork. But with the collapse of the Union, the main buyers also disappeared, who in the early nineties found themselves unable to pay an unrealistic thousand dollars for a new motorcycle that finally received a disc brake.
Following demand, the plant began to fall. At the same time, the next generation of the 638th, or the Java-640 motorcycle, appeared - this is generally a restyling of the 639 model, which differed in filling only in the presence of an electric starter and mufflers (a batch of these machines at that moment was purchased by some structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs). The device in this form is still produced to this day. More recently, the 640 Classic was added to the lineup, which combined the modern filling and appearance of the 634th.
Why?
The choice of the motorcycle "Java-350" (640) can only be explained by the desire to return youth and emotions. In today's traffic, this device will turn out to be an outsider, although it will give a light to many "Chinese" people. The car is quite reliable and makes it possible to consider it as an excellent alternative to various nostalgic devices, including the Yamaha SR400 and Royal Enfield. At the same time, there will be no lack of attention from others.
Choice
Devices that are reliable for their age should be chosen very carefully. Java spare parts are notvery expensive, while the work on the resurrection of the car can easily be compared with the acquisition of a new 640th, therefore, such a motorcycle must be chosen with special attention and predilection. It is advisable to immediately sweep away the rusty and paint-stained on top of dirt and electrical tape and concentrate on finding a well-groomed device from a neat grandfather or fan.
It's no surprise that 30-year-old bikes will have “tired” Java parts, including dusters, rubber and seals, therefore, you can immediately turn a blind eye to them, putting the cost of their replacement into the purchase budget. You need to start with the important thing - inspect the engine. Two-stroke engines have never been distinguished by a large resource, which means that the first step is to measure the compression: it will be great if you can find 9-10 atmospheres; if only 7-8, then the CPG will need to be replaced. A well-adjusted engine with normal compression should start on the third kick of the kickstarter and run smoothly at idle after warming up, without making any sounds.
Tuning
Ideal tuning for the motorcycle "Java-640" will be iron from modern machines: separate lubrication system, gearbox forks, electric starter, contactless ignition. On sale you can also find front and rear arches, a suitable windshield, and also install, for example, heated handles. The saddlebags on the Java-640 bike will look like a saddle on a cow, therefore, it is better for them to prefer the Soviet canonical tuning in the style of the "southerner" - trunk frames,welded from simple metal or stainless steel bars, on which all the belongings of tourists are attached.

You can find a restored or well-preserved device in thematic clubs and forums: strong and friendly associations of fans of this brand will prompt and help, and the devices themselves are mostly in good condition. You can also try to search for a bike on Internet boards, only in this case the chance to get "firewood" is much higher. If you don’t feel like taking risks at all, you should contact the sellers of new motorcycles of the brand - here you can find a motorcycle of the past or current model year, with a guarantee and a new one.
Prices
Despite their age, prices for these devices are kept at a high level: for the 638th model on the Internet they ask for 35-40 thousand. There are cheaper models (about 10 thousand), but usually for this amount they offer a rusty bike without documents, the cost of restoring which can surpass the price of a new Java-640 motorcycle in the cabin, which today is 155,000 rubles. The same will be asked for 350 Premier, Lux will cost 100,000 more, while the nostalgic Replica costs 350,000!
