KamAZ-6540 is an incredibly popular large-tonnage four-axle truck with an extended chassis manufactured by the Kama Automobile Plant.

The vehicle received the usual all-metal cab, which does not have a hood, located above the engine, which can be accessed after it rolls over. KamAZ-6540, as a rule, is not used for long trips, and there is a logical explanation for this. Despite the fact that the plant provides two versions of the cabin (with a high and low roof), there is no sleeper in any of the modifications, which makes the truck unsuitable for long-distance travel.

Chassis based on this KamAZ model can have a short wheelbase, the length of which is 2.08 m, as well as a long one - 2.84 m. The overall overall length of the freight vehicle directly depends on this: if in the first variation it is 7.30 m, then in the second - 8.15 m. The front overhang of KamAZ-6540 also has two length indicators: for a short wheelbase - 1.24 m, and for an elongated one - 1.8 m. The distance between the two front axles - 1.8 m, and between rear axles - 1.3 m.

The total weight of the loaded vehicle is 31 tons, maximum load on the front axle - 12.2 tons, on the rear - 18.8 tons.

The pre-styling KAMAZ-6540 (pictured above) is equipped with a V-shaped 8-cylinder diesel engine from the 740.62-280 series. The power unit is equipped with a turbocharger with forced air cooling, as well as a direct fuel injection system. The engine capacity, which is able to unleash 280 “horses”, is 11.7 liters. The power limit is reached at 1900 rpm and the maximum torque is 1178 Nm at 1300 rpm. The motor fully meets all the requirements of the Euro-3 standard.

The engine can be aggregated with two types of manual transmissions:

  • KAMAZ-154 – 10 gears.
  • ZF 9S1310 – 9 gears.

Both manual transmissions are connected to the motor by means of a diaphragm single-plate clutch equipped with a hydraulic drive, and also have remote mechanical control.

The chassis is made on the basis of a classic frame platform. Front and rear suspension - spring. The total number of wheels - 8, driving - 4. Each wheel is equipped with drumpneumatic brakes. The shoe width is 14 cm, the diameter of the brake drums is 40 cm, and the total effective braking area is 0.84 m2.

The maximum speed of this model is 80 km/h (on a paved public road). Despite the large dimensions, the turning radius should not exceed 10-11 m.

Two fuel tanks are installed on the tractor, the total volume of which is 420 liters, or one tank for 210 liters.

Among other things, the pre-styling model has:

Strengths

As a rule, most of the reviews left by the owners are extremely positive. Many note the smooth running of the truck on highways and highways, as well as the reduced axle load. The impressive carrying capacity has not gone unnoticed either. In restyled models, it became possible to install a lightweight cab with a berth and an ergonomic chair. This allows you to travel long distances. In the winter season, comfort in the cabin will be provided by a stove, the design of which, judging by the reviews, does not cause any complaints.

Weaknesses

Disadvantages, some owners of such equipment also highlight. These include the outer turning radius. It makes it difficult to operate KamAZ-6540 in quarries, at loading sites with limited freespace.
