Gorky plant is famous for its cars and trucks. There are several legendary items in the lineup. One of them is Lawn. It is a medium-tonnage Soviet truck. History
Few people know, but the first batch of experimental trucks of the 52nd model was made back in the 58th year. The chief designer of this car is Prosvirnin Alexander Dmitrievich. He was also involved in the development of the 51st lawn. I must say that the 52nd became his successor and received a number of changes. The novelty was presented at VDNH, as well as at the international exhibition in Belgium. Moreover, the new GAZon received the Grand Prix among trucks. At that time, it was considered a high-tech and progressive car.
ModificationGAZ-52-04 is a shortened version of the usual lawn. Serial production of the model was launched in the 75th year. The car was produced until the 89th.
Appearance
The design of the new lawn was radically different from the previous model. By the way, the GAZ-52-04 cabin became the main one for the creation of the 53rd Lawn. In front - round glass headlights and a massive trapezoidal grille. Unlike the 53rd model, it was painted in body color. There were also other slots for the radiator. The latter was smaller, since a smaller engine was installed on the GAZ-52-04. As for the design of the wings, hood and other elements, they have not changed even on the 53rd Lawn. Appearance turned out to be quite successful for those times. For the convenience of landing on the truck, there is an iron footboard. Door handles are metal. Note that this modification was not just a short-wheelbase, but a shortened flatbed truck. The body was wooden, with iron locks. Some versions were equipped with a hydraulic lift. Among the differences of this modification, it is worth noting the location of the muffler. He was on the left side. On other LAWNS, the muffler is located on the right side.
What do the reviews say about the quality of the metal? The owners note that the GAZon cabin practically does not rot. And this despite the fact that the car is already about half a century old. Cab
Let's move to the lawn salon. Among the features worth noting is the fact that there are no separate seats. The cabin is triple, and for everyone there is a one-piece, wide sofa. Below it on the right side is the battery box. The salon itself is devoid of any frills. Here is a simple three-spoke plastic steering wheel without any adjustments, as well as an iron panel. The instrument panel includes a tachometer, speedometer and a pair of gauges. There is a glove compartment in the middle of the cabin. On the passenger side - an iron handle. In general, the GAZon uses a minimum of plastic parts. The cabin is almost completely iron. There is no noise isolation here.
It was very noisy and hot inside in summer. The GAZ-52-04 engine was literally torn already at medium speeds, and all the soundswalked freely into the salon. In winter, the stove worked well. But since, apart from metal, there was no additional insulation, the cabin cooled down very quickly. Over time, the upholstery of the seats was worn out and torn. Pieces of foam came out. The floor also wore out. Many owners laid ordinary Soviet linoleum here. The same trend was observed with other lawns. It somehow covered all kinds of cracks and protected from drafts. The doors in the car were completely iron, without any upholstery. Remarkably, the locks and power windows worked reliably in any weather. Of the comfort items, one can only note two sun visors and a window that opened separately from the window. It was the window that saved the drivers on hot summer days, launching a stream of fresh air into the hot cab.
Specifications GAZ-52-04
It was planned that the Soviet truck would be equipped with a completely new engine of advanced design, with a prechamber-torch ignition system. And so it happened. Under the hood of the Lawn is a six-cylinder in-line gasoline engine with 80 horsepower with a torque of 21.5 kGm, which is available from 1.6 thousand rpm. The compression ratio of the engine is 6, 7 (the engine is derated). The working volume is 3485 cubic centimeters. For this motor, a two-chamber carburetor was provided. At the same time, the engine ran on low-octane fuel. According to the passport, the car is designed for the 66th gasoline.
Engine cylinder diameter - 82 mm. At the same time, the movepiston is 110 millimeters. Among the features of this motor, it is worth noting the separate cooling of the block and cylinder head. And for greater wear resistance of the crankshaft, engineers used trimetallic liners for connecting rod and main bearings with a special ceramic-metal sublayer. So, the bearing was a steel tape with a copper-nickel layer and an anti-friction alloy.
The engine design uses dirt traps located on the crankshaft. And instead of two separate oil filters, a single, centrifugal one was used.
What are the operational characteristics of the GAZ-52-04? The maximum speed of the new truck was 70 kilometers per hour. At the same time, fuel consumption is 20 liters per 100 kilometers at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour. But practice has shown that this engine can consume more fuel. On average, this engine consumes 25 liters of fuel.
Among the features worth noting is the fact that this engine was officially cooled with plain water. Even on the coolant temperature sensor was the inscription "water". This is due to the fact that antifreeze had not yet been invented in the 60s. He first appeared on the Zhiguli in the 70s. But on trucks, antifreeze began to be used only closer to the 90s. The engines of Soviet trucks were perfectly cooled with ordinary water. However, there were cases of boiling. As a rule, this is due to a malfunction of the thermostat or a high load on the engine itself (mountains, overload, and so on).
Transmission
The gearbox on the GAZ-52-04 was installed fromGAZ-51A modifications. So, it was a mechanical four-speed transmission with spur gears. There were no synchronizers in this box. And to turn on the reverse gear, it was necessary to raise the "dog" on the gearshift lever. The latter also had a curve at the base.
A few years later, the 52nd GAZon began to be equipped with a four-speed gearbox, where there were synchronizers in third and fourth gear. The rear axle was hypoid, with a gear ratio of 6.83. According to reviews, the transmission required getting used to. To switch from one speed to another, you need a double clutch release and regassing. Also, with a characteristic crunch, reverse gear was engaged.
Chassis
The design of the suspension has also been improved. The truck itself was built on a frame. There is a pivot beam at the front. It is connected to the frame by means of longitudinal semi-elliptical springs. Hydraulic shock absorbers are also used in the front. Behind is a continuous bridge with springs and a sprung suspension. Rear shock absorbers were missing. By the way, on the early short-wheelbase 52's lawns, the root sheets of the springs were bent and thus formed an eye. Sheets were attached to the frame through a bushing with a spring pin. This design required constant care and lubrication of the elements. Under load, the elongation of the sheets was compensated by an earring. In the future, engineers began to use the design on rubber cushions.
Brakes
The brake system was completely drum, hydraulically actuated. There is an amplifier (hydrovacuum). The hand brake was driven to the transmission and had a mechanical drive. According to passport data, the stopping distance of a truck from 50 to 0 kilometers per hour is 25 meters.
How does this car behave on the go? The suspension of this car is stiffer than on subsequent lawns. This is partly the fault of the short base. So, the car jumps strongly on bumps, even when loaded. The car enters corners with difficulty, and there is no need to talk about maneuverability. Unlike ZIL, the Soviet GAZon was never equipped with a hydraulic booster. As for the reliability of the suspension, due to its simplicity, it is undemanding to maintain. But since the age of this car is quite significant, many copies already require attention to the pivots. The bushings wear out, and the front begins to eat up pieces of rubber. The springs on this truck rarely sag, and the shock absorbers also rarely change.

There are several modifications of cars built on the basis of GAZ-52-04:

GAS and modeling
In 2013, the company "DIP Models" released a small copy of the Soviet truck "GAZ-52-04 Adriatic 1986 105203". DIP Models produced several thousand of these in 1:43 scale. The cost of such a scale model is about six thousand rubles.
