The bypass valve is rotated by the exhaust gases which spin it as it passes through the impeller blades. The propeller (rotating impeller) turns the turbine wheel, which helps to create pressure in the manifold. The level of this pressure is determined by the total amount of air passing through the turbine.

The amount and speed of exhaust gases depend on the engine speed, that is, the more revolutions per minute and the more power, the more exhaust gases pass through the turbine, respectively, more pressure is created.

Exhaust gas flow to the turbine impeller must be reduced. Most often, stock cars use an internal turbine bypass valve, due to which exhaust gases are removed directly from the turbine housing. But many pressure valves are installed before the inlet by replacing parts of the exhaust manifolds or by installing a cross pipe.

The internal bypass valve has a largeopening through which exhaust gas escapes. There is a special damper in the internal valve that covers this hole during turbine operation (when the required pressure is reached). This damper is connected to a lever located on the outside of the turbine. And it is connected to the activator lever, which is a pneumatic device that converts pressure into linear movement using a spring and a diaphragm. With the lever, the activator actuates the damper until it is fully open.

Solenoid is a specialized device installed in front of the activator, which changes the pressure entering the activator. As the duty cycles change, the solenoid passes less or more air through itself. It is controlled by a computer that reads the pressure and gives orders to decrease or increase the boost by closing or opening the valve.

The lever itself moves freely, swinging on the mount. If this does not happen and it does not move freely, when separated from the valve rod, then there is some kind of problem and it needs to be fixed. Sometimes the lever can move jerkily, especially when heated. The length of the activator rod varies depending on the regulation of the degree of closeness / openness of the bypass valve. Tightening shortens the valve thrust, and loosening it lengthens it. If the bypass valve is closed more tightly and the pull is shorter, then the activator needs more pressure to open.

External bypass valve is separatea device designed to operate independently of the turbine casing. Usually they are designed for a greater air flow compared to internal ones. Most have a dual activator to help open the valves quickly and thus provide better control over the spin-up of the turbine. The external valves may have different springs, which can be changed to set the minimum boost level.
