Once upon a time, the 1970 Dodge Challenger took its place among the cars of the Big Three. It was then that this model brought something really new to the muscle car class: the longest line of engines (from a seven-liter V8 to a 3.700-liter six. The 1970 Dodge Challenger was a worthy answer to the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.
The 1970 Dodge Challenger debuted in late 1969. Although its body was short-backed and long-nosed, there was a little more space inside, since the wheelbase of the car was increased by five centimeters. At first, the Dodge Challenger was offered only in hardtop body (two-door) or convertible body in SE, R/T or T/A configurations. But first of all, the Dodge Challenger was interested in a wide choice of engines: 3, 700-liter, 145 horsepower; 5, 200 liter, 230 horsepower; 5, 600 liter, 275 bhp; 6, 300-liter, 290, 330 and 335 horsepower; 7-liter, 375 horsepower; 7, 200 liter, 375 or 390 HP
The Dodge Challenger 1970 T/A is one of the very first production cars to have different front and rear wheel sizes. The Challenger 1970 R/T Convertible was produced on an assembly line until 1972.
For engines, the following gearboxes were provided: TorqueFlite automatic transmission and manual transmission with three or four steps. Modifications of the 1970 Dodge Challenger with a Big Block ICE could be equipped with a rather powerful Dana 60 limited slip differential.
The paintwork only accentuated the sporty style of the 1970 Dodge Challenger. Mostly used contrasting colors "HEMI orange" and "crazy plum" with accent stripes on the body. Also, future car owners could order a dual air intake on the hood, a supercharger or a rear wing on the trunk.
The Dodge Challenger was sent to the races in its first year of release. Exclusively for this, a limited edition version of T / A was released. 1970 Dodge Challenger was 4th in Trans-Am.
In 1971, the appearance of the 1970 Dodge Challenger was slightly updated. The grille and taillights have been changed. The R/T version has rear opening plastic vents. In the same year, the Dodge Challenger 1970 T/A was discontinued as it no longer raced, and the R/T convertible. Due to the new standards that have been adopted by the Conservation Society, there have been some changes to the list of engines.
In 1972, due to the tightening of requirements and the constant increase in the price of insurance, the Dodge Challenger 1970 againhas undergone changes. In addition, it has become customary to measure torque and power according to the “net” principle. This led to a decrease in performance by twenty to thirty percent. This year, the Dodge was offered with only three engines converted to unleaded petrol.
In 1973, new standards regarding car bumpers were adopted. This resulted in the only change to the exterior of the 1970 Dodge Challenger. The new bumpers had large chunks of rubber that protruded from the body.
In 1974, the Dodge Challenger began to be equipped with inertial seat belts, as well as a system to prevent the engine from starting if someone in the cabin was not fastened. The set of motors has also changed. The 5.200-liter unit remains, but a new one has appeared - a 5.900-liter engine with 245 horsepower.
The Dodge Challenger was discontinued in 1974. In five years, Dodge has assembled and sold 1,880,600 vehicles.
