Kama Automobile Plant is famous not only for its special equipment and military trucks. This plant also produces completely civilian truck tractors. Initially, this was KamAZ-5410. This machine was used in all the republics of the USSR. But the years go by, and the design of the tractor is noticeably outdated. Now the Kama Automobile Plant produces several models of modern tractors. One of them is KamAZ-6460. Specifications, photos and review of this car - later in our article.
Description
This truck was born in 2003. The car became the successor to the outdated KamAZ-54115 tractor. By the way, the 6460 model was created on its basis. The car is still mass-produced and has a 6x4 wheel arrangement. This truck is mainly used to transport oversized cargo.
Design
Appearance for the truck is not in the first place. Therefore, the KamAZ-6460 tractor does not differ in exquisitedesign forms. The cabin is the simplest. The same was used on the 5460 tractor with a 4x2 wheel arrangement.
The difference between the new KamAZ and model 54115 is the presence of new, European rims. They are much easier to board. The wheels are now tubeless and can be balanced. The spare wheel is located between the front and rear axle, at the bottom. The cab has a sun visor and additional mirrors. Also, the truck was equipped with dual fog lights as standard.
Of course, KamAZ-6460-73 is not produced in this form now. Updates took place in 2012. And not only in design, but also in the technical part (but more on that later). So, the truck tractor received a new bumper with crystal optics and a modified radiator grille. The size of the lateral "gills" has decreased. The rest of the design remains the same.
What are the disadvantages of this truck tractor? The cab on the KamAZ-6460 truck is prone to corrosion. This is especially true for versions with an old cab. The new one already has more plastic parts. Also, many owners say that the cab on KamAZ is very poorly painted. So, after three or four years of operation, chips form on the surface of the paintwork. Headlights turn yellow over time. These "diseases" are typical for all KamAZ trucks with this cab.
Dimensions, clearance
The total length of the tractor is 6.58 meters. Width - 2.5 meters, height - 3 meters. Ground clearance - 25 centimeters. This is enough to get aroundpaved, and on unpaved roads. This tractor has excellent cross-country ability.
Weight, load capacity
The curb weight of the tractor is 9.35 tons. Saddle load - 16.5 tons. The total weight reaches 26 tons. The car can tow a variety of trailers. Depending on the modification, KamAZ-6460 is equipped with a Jost fifth wheel coupling with a 50.8 mm king pin, or a George Fisher with a 90 mm king pin. Saddle height may vary. The distance from the top point to the ground is 1285-1410 millimeters.
KamAZ-6460 is capable of towing trailers with a total weight of up to 52.5 tons. And the maximum weight of the road train is 62 tons. Very often it is used as a timber or fuel truck.
Salon
Inside the cabin looks the same as on the younger two-axle model 5460. KamAZ received new seats with a headrest, as well as a different front panel. There is more plastic in the cabin. The steering wheel is now adjustable, but the "steering wheel" is still huge. Above the head there are several niches for various documentation. The cabin is equipped with a berth. In some modifications there are two sleeping shelves. A lot of space in the cabin takes a cutout for the engine. New cab versions have a small table with two cupholders.
Despite numerous changes, the interior is still uncomfortable. So, the cabin is not airtight and air enters the cabin. The driver's seat has a flat sidesupport, which causes fatigue on long trips. On the move, the cabin shakes, noise and vibrations from the engine are clearly felt even at idle. The ceiling is very low. The cabin cools down quickly. Weak thermal insulation in the area of the rear wall. In winter, it is very cold from there. Many models do not have an independent heater. The standard stove heats up, but if you turn it off, the cabin will cool down very quickly.
Specifications
KamAZ-6460 before restyling was equipped with a domestic V-engine 740.63. This is a turbocharged power unit with aftercooling of the charge air and common rail fuel injection. With a volume of 11.76 liters, it develops 400 horsepower and 1764 Nm of torque.
Chinese Cummins diesel engines are already being installed on KamAZ-6460 vehicles with a new cab. In our case, this is the ISF 400 engine. This power unit produces the same 400 horsepower, but it has a smaller number of cylinders (six), a working volume (8.9 liters) and an in-line layout. This has significantly reduced the average fuel consumption from 43 to 35 liters per 100 kilometers. Also note that in winter the consumption will be about 2-3 liters higher than under the same conditions in summer.
Among the typical malfunctions, it is worth noting the injection pump and the turbine. To delay repairs, you need to change the filter on time, as well as the oil (and monitor its level in the engine).
Transmission
Both engine options were equipped with a 16-speed manual gearbox developed by Germanexperts at ZF. The box has a Saks diaphragm single-plate clutch with a 430 mm driven disc. The box drive is hydraulic. Transmission after years turns on well, without crunches. The owners do not express any particular complaints about the ZF box.
Chassis
The car has two drive axles. Front and rear dependent suspension, leaf spring. The role of the brakes is performed by 420 mm drums installed on both the rear and front axles.
Steering - gearbox with hydraulic booster. As the owners note, KamAZ vehicles have very lax steering. And the 6460 is no exception.
We also note that after restyling, new KamAZ trucks began to come with a reinforced frame. But the layout of bridges and balancers remained the same (it has not changed since the time of model 54115).
Cost
If we consider the option of buying used cars, ten-year-old tractors are sold at prices ranging from one to one and a half million rubles. New models cost around four to five million rubles.
KAMAZ in computer games
This model is much loved by gamers. So, many mods on KAMAZ-6460 are judged in the Euro Truck Simulator game of the first and second parts.
Mod provides for the possibility of tuning KamAZ. There is also an original interior with working animation.
