The mass air flow sensor (abbreviated as DMRV) is an indispensable device that determines and regulates the supply of the required amount of air to the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. Its design necessarily includes a hot-wire anemometer, the main function of which is to measure the costs of the supplied gases. The air flow sensor VAZ-2114 and 2115 is located near the air filter. But regardless of its location, it breaks down the same way, like all modern models of the Volga plant. In this article, we will look at the symptom of a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor, and also find out how to check its current condition without calling specialists.

How can you tell if the MAF needs to be replaced or repaired?

Actuallythere are a lot of symptoms of breakdowns of this part. The main sign of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor is the appearance of the Check Engine lamp on the dashboard (literally - “Check the engine”). Also, a malfunction of the DMRV may be indicated by increased fuel consumption. Another symptom is poor engine starting. This problem may occur even when the battery level is 80-99% and it is 30 oC outside. The strange movement of the car can also signal breakdowns.

The main symptom of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor may be poor acceleration dynamics and "failures" in motion, that is, the car brakes sharply, and then accelerates sharply. And the last symptom is poor engine performance. If the engine is constantly running intermittently, and its speed is constantly “jumping”, this is a sign of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor.

Determine the current state of the part

Since you can check the air flow sensor without contacting the service station, this instruction will be useful to all motorists. So, in order to check the DMRV, you need to unscrew the clamp that secures the corrugation of the air intake at the outlet.

This is done with a curly screwdriver.

After removing the clamp, carefully remove the pipe and look at its surface. Ideally, its inside should be dry and clean. By the way, if you change the air filter out of time, it can negativelyaffect the condition of the air flow sensor and contaminate it with fine particles of road dust. Next, using a 10 open-end wrench, we unscrew the fasteners of the DMRV and look at its condition. When the rubber seal ring is misplaced on the input edge, it must be corrected or replaced immediately. Otherwise, due to dust ingress, the sensor will cease to function normally. If, during disassembly, you find traces of oil in the design of the diagnosed part, this indicates a clogged oil separator or an increased concentration of lubricant in the motor. In the first case, the system should be cleaned, and in the second, excess oil should be drained.

Remember, no matter what signs and malfunctions are present, in no case should you neglect the replacement or repair of the sensor, otherwise you will be guaranteed increased fuel consumption.
