There are 4 systems in every car: lubrication system, brake system, fuel system and ignition system. Naturally, if one engine fails, it will not work, which means that the car will simply not be needed. To prevent this from happening, you need to constantly monitor them and monitor their status, even if their work is not satisfactory.

In this article we will take a closer look at the ignition system. It is not so complicated that you need to turn to specialists for every occasion, and not so simple that you don’t do it in case of a serious breakdown. Its main components are the ignition distributor and the ignition coil. Their condition must be carefully monitored. First of all, it is worth looking at whether there are any damages and cracks on them. Here, special attention should be paid to such a detail as the ignition distributor cap. If there are cracks on it, then it must be changed immediately, since breakdowns “to ground” are formed, which means misfiring.

The ignition distributor incorporates a contact assembly, or a Hall sensor, both act as a current interrupter to the primary winding of the ignition coil. At the moment of opening the contacts, the current flow stops, and an induction current is formed in the secondary winding of the ignition coil, which has a voltage of up to 20 kV. The fact is that its frequency is low, so high voltage wires do not melt. Then, through the central high-voltage wire, the current is supplied to the ignition distributor, after which, by means of a slider, it is distributed over the cylinders, more precisely, over the candles screwed into the head.

This design has been widely used due to its comparative reliability, simplicity and durability. Naturally, in many brands and models there are some differences, but they are not fundamental.

Of course, there are times when the ignition system needs to be repaired. Before doing this, be sure to disconnect the battery, since a short in the ignition system is especially painful for the car's electronics. If the engine does not start at all, then it is worth first determining the nature of the malfunction. The ignition coil is checked using a conventional tester. It is also worth making sure that there are no short circuits to ground, especially the wire coming from one of the ignition coil leads to the ignition distributor. If everything is in order with the specified details, then if available, you need to make sure that the switch is working. It rarely fails, but it happens and happens due to a short circuit. Before replacing it, you need to check the chain for a similar item.

Well, ifafter that, the car continues to rest, it is worth looking under the cover of the ignition distributor. If there is a contact assembly, then you need to check the gap, and also inspect for the presence of shells. If it is not there, then there may be one malfunction: the resistor located on the slider has burned out. It just needs to be replaced. Many change it with a piece of wire, which is not worth doing at all.

In conclusion, it is worth saying that caring for the ignition system comes down to the timely replacement of spark plugs, and you also need to make sure that the high-voltage wires are not damaged. If you follow these simple rules, then there will be a stable spark on the candles, which, as they say, will “kill an elephant.”
