Having your own car is very convenient, you can get to any place at any time of the day. In addition, if this is not just a car, but a chic model from a well-known manufacturer, then riding an “iron horse” will be a great pleasure. And proper care of the car will increase the time of its operation, while it is necessary to pay attention to even small problems. After all, timely elimination of problems will help prevent damage to large machine components. For example, a preventative replacement of the power steering fluid will prevent costly repair of this device in the service center. Let's consider this question in more detail.

What is power steering

The power steering is designed to provide a comfortable ride on the road when cornering, as well as to protect the car from breakdown during jolts, bumps when hitting ledges and pits, and even when a tire is punctured onsignificant speed. This device consists of a pump, distributor, hydraulic cylinder, fluid reservoir (tank) and connecting hoses. At the same time, timely replacement of the power steering fluid will increase the life of all elements of the system.

As a rule, the hydraulic booster is installed in the steering mechanism or between the steering gear and the body. The operation of this device is based on the principle of fluid circulation through the hydraulic booster system, the elimination of friction in the elements of the steering mechanism. The movement of a special fluid is carried out under the pressure of a pump, which is mounted on the vehicle unit and is driven by a belt drive from the crankshaft. Through the high-pressure hoses, the liquid from the tank passes to the distributor and from there to the hydraulic cylinder, and back to the tank it enters through the hoses in which the pressure is lower.

Prophylactic examination

To prevent a more serious breakdown, it is necessary to carry out a diagnostic examination in specialized centers, as well as check the system elements yourself. At the same time, the replacement of the power steering fluid is necessary when the following symptoms of problems appear:

  • The appearance of characteristic sounds when turning the steering wheel (for example, a sound reminiscent of the friction of rubber on a wet metal surface).
  • Small dips when turning the steering wheel of a stationary car.
  • Plaque on the walls of the tank, if heavily soiled, it may be necessary to replace the tank itself.
  • Liquid colorhas changed - become darker, in addition, there may be a burning smell.

Work order

Replacing the power steering fluid is not very difficult, and you can do it yourself without going to a technical center. This may require the following tools and materials:

  • large size syringe;
  • rubber tubes;
  • pliers;
  • screwdriver;
  • small container for used fluid;
  • jack;
  • gloves and blotter;
  • power steering fluid.

The order of work consists of the following steps:

  1. With the engine off, lift the hood and remove the reservoir. It needs to be inspected for damage.
  2. Disconnect the return hose and drain the fluid from the reservoir into a container, placing a cloth so that the oil does not get on the car parts.
  3. Connect the rubber tube to the return hose connector and remove the old oil through it.
  4. Jack up the front wheels for easy turning, start the engine and after a while (5-6 minutes) you need to make several turns of the steering wheel to the extreme position until the remaining old fluid is completely poured out

  5. Reconnect the return hose and reinstall the reservoir. Then fill in new fluid up to the max. It is important to use the recommended brand of product in the vehicle manual.
  6. Enablemotor and keep turning the wheels to bleed the air out of the tank.

This is how the power steering fluid is replaced. This process is not difficult, you can do it yourself, while saving on inspection at the technical center. Proper care of your vehicle will increase its lifespan, and knowing these simple steps will help keep your vehicle in good condition.
