Japanese engines are traditionally known for their high reliability due to well-thought-out design. The very popular Japanese powertrains include Nissan SR series engines. This article discusses the most common of them - the Nissan SR20DE engine.

General Features

SR engines were developed as a replacement for the obsolete CA. This series includes 8 motors with a volume of 1, 6, 1, 8 and 2 liters. The SR20DE appeared in 1989. Over time, it was gradually replaced by the QR series engines. Production of the SR20DE ended in 2002.

All engines of this series differ from CA in the following features: electronic multipoint fuel injection, aluminum cylinder block, 16-valve cylinder head, timing chain drive, the presence of hydraulic compensators in the valve mechanism.

Design

SR20DE is a 2- and 4-cylinder in-line engine. The cylinder block is made of aluminium. It has a 16-valve cylinder head and a timing chain drive. Equipped with two camshafts and electronic distributed injection, which is reflected in the name (DE). The piston stroke and cylinder diameter are equal and are86 mm. The piston height is 97 mm, the cylinder is 211.3 mm. The compression ratio is 9.5:1. The length of the connecting rod is 136.3 mm, the diameter of the crankshaft journal is 55 mm. The inlet diameter of the valves is 34 mm, the outlet is 30 mm. Overall dimensions are 685x610x615 mm, weight - 160 kg.

Performance

The SR20DE engine has many performance options (over 10). Power ranges from 115 to 165 hp. With. at 6000-6400 rpm, torque - from 169 to 192 Nm at 4800 rpm.

Modifications

There are several modifications of the SR20DE engine.

The first series of this motor is known as Red Top (on the red valve cover) or High Port. It features 248/240° camshafts with 10/9.2mm lift for a 7500 RPM limit, intake ports, and a 45mm exhaust system.

In 1994 they produced Black Top or Low Port with improved environmental performance. This engine features 240/240° camshafts with 9, 2/9, 2 lift, redesigned intake ports, and a 38mm exhaust system.

In 1995, a new intake camshaft was installed with a phase of 232° and a lift of 8.66 mm, as a result of which the limit was reduced to 7100.

In 2000, the Roller Rocker version was introduced, featuring roller rockers, 232/240° 10/9, 2mm lift camshafts, 3mm shorter springs and valves, lightweight pistons, lighter crankshaft, shortintake manifold.

Application

Manufacturer installed SR20DE on 15 models: S13-S15 Silvia, 180SX, 200SX SE-R, U12 - U14 Bluebird, P10, P11 Primera (Infinity G20), W10, W11 Avenir, B13 - B15 Sentra, N14, N15 Pulsar (Almera), M12 Liberty, NX2000, Y10/N14 Wingroad, С23 Serena, R10, R11 Presea, Rasheen, M11 Prairie Joy, R'nessa.

Problems

The Nissan SR20DE engine, like other engines in the series, is considered very reliable. On its basis, more high-performance engines (SR20DET, SR20VE, SR20VET) were created, which confirms the inherent margin of safety. Serious flaws and weaknesses were not identified. The most common malfunctions include failure of the DMRV and floating idle due to a breakdown of the idle speed controller or the use of low-quality fuel. The resource of the SR20DE engine, according to practical data, is more than 400 thousand km. Timing chain resource - from 200-250 thousand km. Due to the presence of hydraulic lifters, valve adjustment is not required. An oil change is carried out every 15 thousand km, but it is recommended twice as often. The motor holds 3.4 liters of oil grades 5W20-5W50, 10W30-10W60, 15W40, 15W50, 20W20. There are options configured for both 92 and 98 petrol. A complete SR20DE contract engine costs about 20-30 thousand rubles.

As a disadvantage, users note increased noise, primarily due to the gas distribution mechanism. This is especially evident during cold start-up before the oil pressure rises and at low speeds on engines withan old chain, which usually stretches at high mileage (about 250 thousand km), as a result of which the hydraulic tensioner is unable to fully tension it. In addition, the engine in question is characterized by a very high fuel consumption (more than 10 liters per 100 km).

Tuning

Before starting the modification, you need to decide on the list of improvements. This affects the choice of the top of the SR20DE engine. If porting is planned, the cylinder head from the High Port version should be used due to the greater potential. If you do not need to bore the channels, the Low Port cylinder head, which has better purge, is more suitable.

The initial stage of tuning is to modify the intake and exhaust systems. For this, it is recommended to use parts such as cold inlet, JWT S3 camshafts, 4-1 manifold, direct-flow exhaust. In addition, you will need to configure the motor using the JWT control unit. This tuning gives a small performance boost.

To achieve greater performance, you should increase the compression ratio. This can be achieved in two ways.

First is to use lightweight pistons from SR20VE, which will increase this figure to 11.7. In addition to the pistons, it is recommended to install lightweight H-shaped connecting rods, a lightweight flywheel, injectors and exhaust manifold from the same engine, exhaust with a diameter of 63 mm, the camshafts mentioned above and the JWC ECU. In this way, about 200 liters can be achieved. s.

The second option is to combine the cylinder block from the SR20VE and the cylinder headfrom SR16VE N1 with attachments. This will give a compression ratio of up to 12.5. Additionally, a lightweight flywheel, 4-1 manifold, straight-through exhaust should be used. Thus, you can get more than 210 liters. s.

Next, you can install more aggressive camshafts, increase the compression ratio, refine the cylinder block, install a throttle intake, transfer the engine to methanol. Turbocharging the SR20DE is impractical. This is due to the fact that many parts are required and a large amount of work remains to be done: it is necessary to embed oil injectors, replace pistons, injectors, a fuel pump and a regulator, install a turbine, provide it with oil supply and oil drain, install an intercooler, configure using the ECU. The result is a motor similar to the SR20DET. Therefore, it will be much easier and cheaper to replace the SR20DE engine with a branded turbo engine, which costs about 60–65 thousand rubles assembled with a gearbox.
