The ZMZ-511 engine is a gasoline eight-cylinder V-shaped power unit, which, due to its simple structure, reliable design and high-quality technical parameters, was previously widely installed on a variety of domestic medium-duty vehicles.

Motor Factory Development

The plant in the village of Zavolzhye, Gorky Region, began to be built as an enterprise for the production of bicycles. Already in the course of construction, a new decision ordered the plant to produce spare parts for the GAZ automobile plant, and only the third government decree determined the purpose of the plant as a manufacturer of automotive power units, and in 1958 the enterprise received the name Zavolzhsky Motor Plant (ZMZ).

"ZMZ" was built as a full-cycle plant for the manufacture of automobile engines. The company produced the first engines in the fall of 1959 for the GAZ-21 Volga passenger car. In the future, as the company developed, it mastered the production of engines for GAZ trucks and PAZ buses, while constantly expanding the range and quantityproduced motors. In the 1990s, the company first produced a domestic high-speed diesel ZMZ-514.

Further development of the enterprise is connected with joining the Sollers group. Currently, ZMZ manufactures engines for various motor vehicles (more than 20 modifications), spare parts. The plant's products have been certified in accordance with applicable regulations.

Engine production and application

The plant produced the first gasoline engine model ZMZ-511 in 1959. The new power unit was supposed to replace the outdated GAZ-51 engine and at the initial stage of production it was intended to equip the GAZ-53 medium-duty truck, which was produced from 1961 to 1993.

ZMZ-511, due to its simple design and high-quality technical parameters, turned out to be a very successful engine and proved itself well on the installed car. Therefore, the company prepared several engine modifications at once to equip other vehicles, namely:

  • off-road truck GAZ-66;
  • buses of small class "PAZ";
  • SAZ dump trucks;
  • buses of the middle class "KaVZ";
  • GAZ-3307 truck, which replaced the GAZ-53 model.

Currently, the plant produces an upgraded version of the engine under the index ZMZ-511.10.

Technical parameters

The technical parameters of the power unit contribute to widespread use. Atthe manufactured modification of the ZMZ-511 engine, the technical characteristics are as follows:

  • type - four-stroke, gasoline, carburetor;
  • cylinder arrangement - V-shaped with an angle of 90 degrees;
  • cooling method - liquid;
  • number of cylinders – 8;
  • volume - 4, 25 l;
  • power - 125, 0 l. p.;
  • compression value - 7, 60;
  • height - 1, 10 m;
  • length - 1.00 m;
  • width – 0.80 m;
  • weight – 0.262 t;
  • specific fuel consumption - 286 g/kW;
  • oil consumption - 0.4% (of fuel consumption);
  • resource - 300 thousand km.

The specified technical parameters of the motor allow for confident operation of medium-duty vehicles.

Engine Features

When upgrading the ZMZ-511 engine, the following design solutions were applied:

  • highly turbulent combustion chambers installed;
  • cylinder head uses screw inlets;
  • reinforced front support mounting brackets;
  • studless bearing cap fastening method:
  • Ductile iron used in the manufacture of upper compression rings;
  • mounted exhaust gas recirculation system;
  • changed the phase and location of the cams on the camshaft.

These decisions made it possible not only to preserve, but also to strengthen the main advantages of the ZMZ-511, which are considered to be:

  • reliability;
  • simple design;
  • repairability.

Despite this, the engine is currently not installed on mass-produced cars, it is still in demand to replace power units that have worked out their standard period on previously produced cars.
