In the device of any modern car there is an exhaust system. It consists of several parts, including a catalyst, exhaust manifold, resonator and muffler. But few people mention such a detail as the exhaust pipe of the muffler. VAZ-2110 is also equipped with it. What is this element and how is it arranged? See our today's article for answers to these and many other questions.

Characteristic

The exhaust pipe is an integral part of the exhaust system. This element is located after the exhaust manifold and in front of the resonator, consists of a metal base and corrugations. The latter is not present on every system.

What diameter is the exhaust pipe of the muffler? UAZ "Patriot" is equipped with a 60 mm element. The diameter is comparable to what is available on the remaining components of the system: muffler pipe, catalyst, and so on. A distinctive feature of the exhaust system component is the presence of two inputs that smoothly connect to each other. So,first, the exhaust gases enter the central exhaust manifold, then into the branching of the exhaust pipe. Further, the gases released from the engine cylinders move under pressure to the catalyst. Here, all harmful substances are burned up, turning into hydrogen, and removed to the outside. The final element in the system is the muffler. It is he who takes on all the acoustic loads, smoothing sounds and vibrations. As a result, we have a clean and quiet exhaust. By the way, the characteristics of the receiving pipe may be different. It is equipped with two or more inlets. As for the diameter, the GAZ-3310 silencer exhaust pipe has a size of 51 millimeters. Their purpose is the same - the removal of gases from the manifold to the catalyst.

Material

The exhaust pipe of the muffler is made of different types of steel:

  • stainless;
  • aluminized;
  • black.

They all differ in price and quality. Let's take a look at them.

Stainless steel

Such downpipes are very rare due to their high cost. Normally stainless steel is used to make direct-flow mufflers. This cover looks very impressive. The mirror pipe is not only a beautiful appearance, but also a lot of other advantages. So, it is necessary to note the resistance of this material to corrosion. Since the exhaust pipe is located under the bottom of the car, it is constantly exposed to external factors. Outside, its surface is affected by dirt, water and reagents; inside the product is subjected to high temperature loads.

Stainless steel has a high resistance to these factors. In addition, due to the complexity of manufacturing, the price for it is many times more expensive.

Aluminized exhaust pipe

Made from ordinary steel. A distinctive feature is an aluminum coating designed to protect the part from corrosion. The service life of such pipes is about five years. Additionally, they can be equipped with corrugation.

Black

The pipe is made of ordinary steel without additional processing, so the service life often does not exceed two years. After this period, the part must be replaced with a new one. The cost relative to other materials is an order of magnitude lower.

Which one to choose?

The most common muffler downpipe is aluminized. It costs several times less than stainless steel. At the same time, it is highly resistant to corrosion and temperature extremes. Motorists do not recommend purchasing a pipe made of ordinary black steel without additional processing. Some manufacturers cover it with a layer of paint. But you need to understand that after a couple of months the pipe will lose its attractive appearance: high temperature, dirt and water will do their job. And it's pretty hard to take it off. Even if you have a muffler exhaust pipe gasket installed, it is not possible to unscrew the bolts: they stick to the base. The only way out is to cut the hats with a grinder. As for the stainless receiving pipe, it can serve up to 10 years. The only thing isprice and market availability. For some cars, such a part has to be bought on order.

Faults

How to determine if the downpipe is out of order? The surest way is a visual inspection. Since the part is located in a rather difficult place, it cannot be diagnosed without a lift. Therefore, many motorists determine the malfunction "by ear". If the exhaust sound has become louder, there are extra vibrations, and there is a smell of burning in the cabin, most likely the part is out of order.

But it is not always the pipe that breaks through. The corrugation of the exhaust pipe of the muffler can burn out, absorbing excessive vibrations and amenable to high temperature loads. Therefore, when the above signs appear, it is necessary to replace the front pipe or the corrugation on it.

How to replace?

To replace a part that has become unusable, you will need a set of wrenches and a lift (overpass, viewing hole). In addition to a new pipe, a set of gaskets is also needed. The old ones shrink one time.

So, in front of the bottom we find our pipe (usually it is bolted to 13). We fix the nut on one side, on the other we unscrew the bolt. To facilitate unscrewing, you can use the universal lubricant VD-40. If it is impossible to unscrew the fasteners, we take the grinder in our hands and simply cut out the bolts (then do not forget to buy new ones). We take out the pipe, clean the place under the burners and install new elements.

Regarding replacementcorrugations, the latter should be welded into the pipe cavity. Of course, it's easier to buy a new part assembly (especially if you have it made of stainless steel, which is not "grabbed" by a conventional welding machine).

Helpful tips

To reduce the risk of sticking to the surface, it is recommended to treat the bolts with graphite grease or Litol before tightening. Such fasteners will be much easier to remove than raw ones. This completes the replacement procedure. You can start the engine and check the quality of the new pipe. It shouldn't leak. Otherwise, check the tightness of the bolts. If you are going to cut the corrugation and install a new one, pay attention to its length. The size should be 20-40 millimeters larger than the previous one (since part of the pipe itself will also be cut out).
